Language Information - Latin

Latin
Philological information about Latin was prepared by the Translation Studies division of Dijital Tercüme.

Latin is an antique language in the Indo-European family of languages, which is not actively used today. It was the official language of the Roman Empire, which reigned for centuries. We can now see that people in the middle Ages also used Latin. Because the Bible, the holy book of Christians is in Latin, the Latin language and translations to and from Latin were of great importance at their time and especially in religious classes. In addition, Latin is symbolically used in the Vatican. Generally speaking, Latin is the root of most European languages. Especially in English and German, you may come across a lot of words which come from Latin. The Latin language is currently used as an official language of the Vatican. Despite stillbeing taught and spoken by most researchers of history, art and religion, it is a dead language.
Latin can be considered the 'mother' of French, Spanish, Portuguese and Romanian. Although English is not derived from Latin, about half its words and concepts are connected to this language. Because German has words derived from French in its structure it owes a lot to Latin. For this reason, apart from Slavic languages, it is important to learn Latin for those who want to learn western languages. Because it forms the root of so many languages, today it has become necessary to learn Latin in branches of science such as law, medicine,  dentistry, veterinary science, pharmacy, botany, zoology and geology, because most of the terms are derived from Latin. In addition, the importance of Latin in the field of social sciences cannot be denied. Especially in philosophy, archaeology and areas connected to ancient times, sources cannot be understood without Latin.
