Script Translation

Screenplay translations are open to interpretation, changes and different translations; therefore it is one of the hardest categories of translation. Someone who translates screenplays should know both the source and target language on a native-speaker level and have excellent command of the traditions and cultural elements of the language. It would lead to mistranslations if the translator did not have any connection to the target culture. For example, it is of great importance to reflect all religious elements, traditions, and idioms in a translation, and is helpful to add translator’s notes and explanations if necessary. Additionally, it is necessary for the translator to read the play from cover to cover, understand it fully, prepare a draft, create a certain terminology, and then begin translating. For lengthy screenplays, it is important that the translator learns about the author so that s/he understands the author’s point of view, and that the translation reflects the period the play was written in. This is called audience-oriented translation.
Dijital Tercüme has 4 main categories for screenplay translations:
  • Translation of Short Movies/Series:
For this kind of translation, we work with expert translators who know the culture of the target language, the current use of language, slang when necessary, and are capable of expressing these fully in the screenplay of the movies/series. If translated word-for-word, it would create a screenplay that is full of mistakes and almost foreign to the audience of the country where the movie/series will be broadcast. If the translator is to explain a scene, where someone eats a “hot dog”, translating the food “hot dog” as something literal instead of “a sausage sandwich” causes the audience to distance themselves from the film. That’s why, we follow a 16-step translation process so that there is no room for mistakes. The jargons of an action movie and an art movie are completely different from each other; therefore expert translators work meticulously in terms of word choice.
  • Translation of Screenplays based on a Novel, Story, Essay, Anecdote, Commentary, Memoir, Biography/Autobiography or Travels
These kinds of texts should be translated by translators who have also have the skillsof an 'author' because during the translation additions might have to be made to the text in order to make it more fluent in the process of turning it into a screenplay, while still using a literary language, preserving the elements of fiction and fantasy.
  • Translation of Screenplays based on a Theater Play
Theater plays are divided into two as theaters of modern and historical periods, and they should be translated by translators specialized in this field. For example, the language used in scripting a classical theater play from the 17th century is different from a modern play’s language. That’s why it is of great importance that the translators, who have good command of theater plays and themes, take part in such projects for high-quality results.
  • Translation of Screenplays of Childrens Movies and Cartoons, Fables and Fairytales:
Dijital Tercüme works with translators who have ultimate knowledge in this field, who know how to approach children pedagogically, understand their love for impressions and phonetics, and have good command of the culture of the target language and the art of child-rearing, rather than simply translating. We pay utmost attention to translations aimed at children with the projects we carry out in regards to children’s literature and social responsibility projects.
Although the translation of screenplays and subtitles are done based on the same principles, the technology used for subtitles is different as they will be burned into DVDs, movies, or series. Therefore, subtitles are delivered to the customer in the proper format after being translated.
