Language Information - Russian

Russian
Philological information on "Russian" was prepared by the translation studies division of Dijital Tercüme.

Russian is spoken by 170 million people in the world and one of the six official languages of the United Nations. It is the fifth most spoken language in the world. According to philologists, it is one of the hardest languages to learn, reasons being the high number of prefix and suffixes, the length of words, the complexity of nouns and adjectives depending on the inflections, the hard to pronounce 33-letter alphabet and letters from the Cyrillic script. After the revolution of 1917, simplifications to the language were made to increase literacy rates.

Russian is spoken most commonly in Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Belarus and also in Azerbaijan, Lithuania, Armenia, Moldova, Estonia, Uzbekistan, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Latvia and Tajikistan. Although it is not as common as it was in the past, it is still used in all former countries of the Soviet Union. Russian is one of the Slavic languages, it belongs to the East Slavic Languages subgroup of the Indo-European Language Family. The history of the Russian language dates back to the ninth century and originally many words were derived from old Slavic languages and the Old Russian Language.

Those who have graduated from the Russian language and literature program are given the title "Philologist". However, graduates work with different titles.
