Philological information on "Danish" was prepared by the translation studies division of Dijital Tercüme.
Danish is the official language of Denmark. It is spoken by 5,5 million people in the world, and it belongs to the Northern Germanic language family. Danish has 3 main dialects. These are Bornholmian, Insular Danish, and Jutlandic.
The Danish language is known as Scandinavian in the countries of Norway, Sweden, and Finland. Danish speakers mostly reside in Denmark and on the Danish border of Germany. In addition, it is taught as a mandatory secondary language in Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands, which are former colonies of Denmark.
Danish contains 10 vowels which have 46 different pronunciations. There are major differences between how it is written and how it is pronounced. The pronunciation of words change depending on their position in the sentence, and sometimes they are not even pronounced. Although there are general rules on connections, inflectional suffixes and verb conjugations, there are plenty of exceptions. It is very similar to Swedish and Norwegian. Although the spelling and meaning of the words are almost identical, there are differences in pronunciations. There are continuing efforts to modernize it by decreasing the amount of special sounds which are very difficult to learn.
Danish can be learned in private language classes in our country. In order to succeed at learning Danish, good verbal skills, a good memory, and enthusiasm for learning foreign languages, as well as an interest in literature are necessary. Those who have learned Danish can work as translators and interpreters in institutions that are engaged in commercial or cultural relations with Denmark. The seemingly complex features of Danish grammar make it a hard language to learn for other Europeans.
