Finnish is a language spoken by 6 million people in mostly Finland (91% of the Finnish speak Finnish as a native language, 5% speak Swedish), Russia, Sweden and Norway. It is one of the official languages of the European Union and it originates from the Finno-Ugric branch of the Uralic language family. Finnish belongs to the Finnic Languages group of Finno-Ugric subgroup of Uralic languages. According to linguists, the closest relatives of Finnish are; Estonian, Karelian, Sami, Vepseian, Mordvinic, Mari and Komi languages. Additionally, Finnish is very close to the Tatar and Chuvash languages. On the other hand, there are similar words between Japanese and Finnish.

It is considered one of the hardest languages to learn. Despite this, it is one of the most phonetic among natural languages, in other words "it is read as it is written". It is an agglutinative language and the "-te" suffix is used to formalize a sentence. When the "-te" suffix is not used, the sentence becomes informal. Also when addressing more than one people the "-te" suffix is added. The sentence order is subject-object-verb and using similar letters consecutively is also very common. Frequently used double vowels are stressed in pronunciation. There are many suffix and grammar forms. The stress is usually in the beginning of all sentences including questions.

If you want to adapt well to living in Finland, it is vital that you learn Finnish. If you are applying for Finnish citizenship, you are required to have a sufficient level of (third level) oral and written Finnish or Swedish.
